Responsibility

Flight of the Spirit: Part 2
Interior Castle: Sixth Mansions: Chapter Five

Really, sisters, the mere writing of this makes me astounded when I reflect how the great power of this great King and Emperor manifests itself here. (Teresa of Avila: Sixth Mansions: Chapter Five)

From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded. (Luke 12:48)

If God were to reveal Himself to those who had no interest in Him, they would most likely make life changes. If that’s the case, how much are we, who know and love God, obligated to respond to His power with inward transformation and outward expression of that change. The Voltaire quotation (made famous in Spiderman): “With great power comes great responsibility.” is also applicable spiritually.

As a general principle “to whom much has been given, much will be required”. We may have been given a good education, money, time, a strong family, or even mystical prayer experiences like the “flight of the spirit”. We cultivate these experiences to deepen our character and develop our skills. Then we express those experiences, skills, and opportunities in our relationships and through our vocation.

I encourage you to reflect on what you’ve been given and what you’ve experienced. How can you enrich your skills and experiences? What can you prune from your life that doesn’t align with who you are? What does better self-care look like? How can you use your skills and experiences to help others find their own voice?
