Silkworms and Butterflies: Part Three
Everything it sees on earth leaves it dissatisfied. (Interior Castle: Fifth Mansions: Chapter 2)
Prior to the transformation of the soul, the silkworm focused on ordinary life. Now, as a butterfly, it is bored with the “silkworm life”. Instead of trying to medicate this boredom through spiritual activity or consumerism, we should shift our focus to spiritual disciplines and the transformation of our soul.
Does this mean we reject “ordinary life”? No! But we need to see ordinary life differently. Instead of an endless set of obligations and chronic anxiety, the ordinary activities of life become tools of transformation and opportunities to love others.
